Chiles gaming oversight body, the Superintendence of Casinos (SCJ), has issued a report indicating that the industry’s tax contribution achieved an all-time peak in October, reaching 16.85 billion Chilean pesos (around £15 million/€17.6 million). This coincided with gambling income also hitting a new high.
Gambling revenue in Chile reached an unprecedented level in October.
This marks the highest tax contribution since 2008, driven by casinos’ total gross gaming revenue (GGR) hitting 54.9 billion Chilean pesos throughout October.
All 26 casinos in Chile were fully operational throughout October, welcoming 551,840 patrons. This is the first instance of all 26 casinos being fully operational since the onset of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in March 2020.
The SCJ noted that casinos are gradually resuming operations as the pandemic’s impact subsides.
Of the total contribution, 7.75 billion Chilean pesos originated from Chile’s casino tax. The value-added tax on gambling amounted to 7.37 billion Chilean pesos, while income tax totaled 1.72 billion Chilean pesos.
The Sun Monticello casino contributed the most, paying 1.07 billion Chilean pesos in taxes to its regional government and an equivalent amount to the city government.
Viña del Mar received 445.5 million Chilean pesos in taxes paid to its regional and city governments by casinos.
Meanwhile, the Marina del Sol casino in Talcahuano contributed the third highest amount, paying 3.888 billion Chilean pesos in taxes to its regional and city governments, respectively.
